“You see them playing Fortnite. I see them developing critical skills for the coming world of virtual, remote work!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Farmville redefines farming. Fortnite leads to virtual welding. League of Legends leads to digital twin virtual surgery.
These kids are gaming, but what they are really doing is accelerating virtual tech, because the skills they have picked up within the gaming world come into the workplace, and redefine the world of work. Gaming and virtual reality collide with robotics and more.
We’ve long talked about virtual reality – and the technology (known as VR) has long been hyped. But it is coming together quickly as the virtual world becomes a part of our real world. And the thing is, these kids already live in a VR world when they are gaming.
Two years ago, I was in Sao Paolo, running a welding machine 3,000 miles away through a virtual reality headset. That reality is going to hit us soon, and the implications for outsourcing and offshoring are staggering.
So the next time you yell at your kid for gaming too much, pause for a moment.
