“A child alive today will live in the year 2062 – long before the arrival of the year 2062!” – Futurist  Jim Carroll

I’ve always been inspired by the fact that the amp in Spinal Tap could go to 11 – and so my 19 Trends for 2019 goes to 20! It’s one higher! It goes to 20!

Can you imagine what the world of 2062 – the year the Jetsons’ TV show was set in – might look like for a child alive today?
I find it hard to do so, given that the pace of change is accelerating so quickly. We will probably see advances in science, technology, society, and more that we can barely begin to comprehend.

And yet, there are signs – and also warning signs in our world of today. Will they still have democracy – or will it have been destroyed by the social media tools we built in the earlier part of the century, and their misuse by media and politicians to lull the populace into sleep?

What careers will they work in? They will probably be working in jobs and careers that do not yet exist, utilizing knowledge not yet generated, with scientific discoveries not yet discovered.

Careers? I spent some time in a project with a Grade 5 class talking about potential future careers with a group of 10-year-olds – and there are lot of fascinating future career options! The future isn’t just about careers for doctors, nurses, firemen, and office professionals — it involves a lot of really funky new careers.

Like agricultural drone pilots, healthcare robot deployment managers, outer space tour guides, water architects, 3D printer clothing designers, computer hacker anti-hackers, remote sports performance analysts, smart highway traffic managers, and smart packaging advertising managers!

Want to try to have better insight into the future? Take a look at a young child today, and try to imagine their world of tomorrow!

The unimaginable will become imaginable, the unreachable reachable, do the right things to build a world for them that will allow them to build a future full of promise and opportunity.
