Jim Carroll's keynote told the Association for Manufacturing Technology's 2018 annual conference in Miami that long-term manufacturing success would come from innovation, skill reinvention and adapting to relentlessly faster product and technology cycles. The keynote, "Manufacturing Could Not Return To The Past," laid out the challenge and the path forward. Manufacturing transformation could not be achieved by preserving old assumptions while product lifecycles, technologies and customer demands accelerated. The instinct to wait for things to settle down was, itself, the risk. Six trends are shaping that shift. Skill Reinvention. New tools and processes were continuously resetting the knowledge required on the factory floor. Shorter Lifecycles. Products and technologies were aging faster, forcing organizations to reinvent sooner. IoT Connectivity. Products and equipment were increasingly generating data and becoming part of connected systems. Robotics + Cloud. Automation and cloud-based capabilities were reshaping how production was designed and operated. Rapid Prototyping. Faster iteration was compressing the distance between idea, design, test and production. Time To Market. Competitive advantage was increasingly coming from converting ideas into products faster. Manufacturing competitiveness, Jim told the AMT audience, comes from constant reinvention — not from trying to freeze the future. Machining and manufacturing has always prided itself on precision. Jim's point to AMT's members was that the same discipline needed to apply to organizational reinvention — measured, deliberate, but never standing still. Explore more keynote case studies.
