“Never underestimate the ability of remarkable individuals or successful companies to implode!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
‘This quote came to my mind as I was preparing for my talk for a number of utility and energy CEOs last night.
And the quote operates at multiple different levels. Anyone can build up a successful career path or great personal trajectory, and might in the eyes of others be fully in control of their future – and then, in an instant, blow it away. The downfall came come from arrogance, hubris, personal conflict, overconfidence, or a failure to adapt to fast change. In other cases, personal failings can be the cause. The list goes on.
The same thing holds true with companies and organizations: the very same attitudes can be embedded in the very DNA of the organization. In the room last night were senior executives of some pretty major organizations, with very successful business organizations built upon solid foundations and concepts.
Yet the winds of change in the industry are profound – renewable energy, micro-grids, hyper-connectivity, self-generation of power, and so much more. No one in the industry can afford to be complacent today!’
