“Success is the byproduct of multiple, continuous failures!” -Futurist Jim Carroll
After a keynote, there’s often a Q&A. And one of the most frequent questions is, “so what should I do right now?” And that’s where I bring up my concept of ‘experiential capital.’ There is so much going on with so many trends – so many new ideas, concepts, business models, technologies – that it can be difficult to know which ones will work, and which ones will not. So with that in mind, the “start small” aspect of my innovation mantra kicks in – try a whole bunch of small things, not to necessarily succeed, but simply to build up your experience.
The more experience you build up, the better positioned you will be for the future! And no doubt, you’ll experience some failure along the way – which doesn’t matter, because your first goal isn’t success – it’s experience!
Did you see what Space-X did yesterday? Basically, they tried to catch a piece of a falling rocket fairing with a boat that essentially had a giant catchers mitt. It didn’t work. It failed. But boy, did they build up a lot of experiential capital! They’ll get it right at some point, and will have reinvented the concept of the rocket launch yet again.’’
