## Article Content
Whirlpool brought me in to explore the future of the connected home. The Internet of Things was beginning to move from abstract technology discussion into everyday products. Appliances could become connected. Sensors could generate data. Software could add new capability. Homes could become more intelligent. And customer expectations were beginning to shift toward products that were not simply physical objects, but parts of a digital ecosystem. Six themes framed the discussion: Connected Appliances. Household products were gaining digital connectivity. Sensor Intelligence. Products could increasingly understand and report on their own operation. Software-Enabled Features. New capability could increasingly be added through software. Predictive Service. Connected products could support earlier maintenance and service insight. Changing Consumer Expectations. Customers increasingly expected products to integrate with digital life. The Home as a Platform. Individual devices were becoming part of a wider connected system. The important shift was from product to platform. A connected product creates an ongoing relationship rather than a one-time transaction. The home was becoming a connected technology platform — and the appliance industry was becoming part of the software economy.
