# Keynote: PRISM International Annual Conference, Bonita Springs – What World Class Innovators Do

Jim Carroll delivered the opening keynote address at the 2016 PRISM International Annual Conference in Bonita Springs, Florida on May 17, 2016, speaking to members of PRISM International (Professional Records & Information Services Management) and the records and information management (RIM) industry. Themed “Navigating the Oceans of Opportunity,” the conference challenged RIM leaders to think about the opportunities available to them and where their profession could grow. Carroll’s talk, “What Do World Class Innovators Do That Others Don’t?” challenged delegates to accelerate their ability to deal with the faster rate of change in their businesses and to come up with solutions, opportunities, and ideas faster. The central message was that records retention, access, security, and privacy are strategic issues rather than a tactical “necessary evil” — and that with exploding volumes of data from electronic health records, connected devices, and the Internet of Things, RIM professionals had a window to lead in defining what a record is and how that information is organized, protected, and accessed.
