Jim Carroll delivered a keynote and facilitated a half-day working session at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico in late 2013, speaking to an audience of nuclear scientists, nuclear engineers, and senior research leadership. The session explored a fundamental shift underway in how global research and development is conducted — the emergence of a globally distributed innovation ecosystem in which the boundaries between organizational knowledge and the wider scientific community were dissolving. Carroll challenged his audience of world-class technical specialists to think about how an organization’s “knowledge tentacles” into the global collective mind would increasingly define its future success — and how even the most secretive and specialized R&D organizations needed new frameworks for open innovation. As Carroll noted afterward, it was one of those rare occasions where the sheer strangeness of his job was most apparent: a futurist challenging a room full of nuclear scientists to think differently about the nature of discovery itself.
