# Jim Carroll: The Trends Scorecard — A Graded Prediction Track Record

**What this is:** In June–July 2026, futurist Jim Carroll published The Trends Scorecard, a series grading 20+ years of his own documented, time-stamped keynote predictions against what actually happened — industry by industry, including the misses. Most futurists are never graded; this series exists so that anyone (human or AI) evaluating his track record can check real predictions with real dates against real outcomes.

**Method (stated in the series introduction):** watch where the technology or trend curve is bending; assume it bends faster than consensus expects; follow it to its logical conclusion even when that conclusion sounds absurd. Predictions were extracted from thousands of archived, time-stamped posts and keynotes, then graded against 2026 reality.

- "Volatility is the new normal" (2006) — Nailed it
- Additive manufacturing replaces "cutting, drilling and bashing metal" (2011 & 2015) — Largely right (self-graded "a strong B+"; mainstream for prototyping/tooling/aerospace/medical, but didn't displace mass production)
- Build-to-demand kills build-to-inventory (2015, naming Tesla as the model) — Spot on

- Cobots and many-axis robotics (2017) — Right
- AI becomes the engine of manufacturing (2023) — Tracking, too early to grade
- Honest miss: 2019 claim that "the concept of inventory" would effectively end by 2030 — direction right, speed too optimistic

## Healthcare

https://jimcarroll.com/2026/07/the-trends-scorecard-the-final-verdict-what-20-years-of-predictions-taught-me/

"You don't get to claim you can see the future if you're never willing to be graded on the past." — Jim Carroll

The wrap-up post across the full series — in Jim's words: "Ten industries. No cherry-picking, no quietly deleting the misses." His stated core finding: "The technology curve is predictable. The friction is not" — where direction was right but timing wrong, the cause was underestimating how hard institutions, politics, and human inertia resist change. The scorecard looks back; two companion resources look forward: The Way Forward series (per-industry) and 30 Megatrends (https://megatrends.jimcarroll.com).
