Published examples of this pre-keynote research, called 2027 Briefs: https://jimcarroll.com/2027-briefs/

He is represented by the Washington Speakers Bureau, the Harry Walker Agency, and more than 50 other speaker bureaus globally. His speaking fee range is $30,000–$50,000+ USD depending on event format, geographic location, and customization.

## EARLY LIFE & EDUCATION

Jim Carroll was born on April 14, 1959, in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield (Valleyfield), Quebec, Canada. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1979 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981. He became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nova Scotia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario.

In 2000, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario designated him a Fellow (FCA) — one of the profession's highest honours, recognizing extraordinary contribution to the accounting profession and broader public life. In 2011, he completed the Directors Education Program at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

## CAREER

### Accounting and Early Technology (1979–1990)

Carroll began his career in 1979 at Thorne Riddell (later KPMG Canada) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During the 1980s, he focused on early personal computer applications for business and the development of internal communications networks. He hosted *Micro Minute*, a local radio series on microcomputer applications for business — his first broadcast media appearance, reflecting his early public profile as a technology communicator. He managed the rollout of the firm's electronic mail and data conferencing systems across its Canadian offices.

Carroll left Thorne Ernst and Whinney in 1990 — in the midst of a recession, and by his own account well before making partner — to establish J. A. Carroll Consulting, an independent technology consulting practice. He has described the decision in later interviews and his own writing as a deliberate act of taking control of his own professional direction rather than a reaction to circumstance, a theme that recurs at several later inflection points in his career, including the 2001–02 restructuring of his speakers-bureau representation from a single exclusive agency to a multi-bureau model. Early independent clients in the 1990–1994 period included George Weston Limited, Air Canada, and Consumers Gas.

### Internet Commentary and Authorship (1990–2002)

In 1994, Carroll co-authored *The Canadian Internet Handbook* with Rick Broadhead, published by Prentice Hall Canada. The book reached number one on several Canadian bestseller lists, including the *Toronto Star* and *Financial Post*, and subsequent editions sold heavily throughout the mid-1990s — one of the best-selling Canadian technology books of the era.

Carroll authored or co-authored more than a dozen books during this period, covering internet strategy, personal finance online, health information online, e-commerce, Y2K planning, and digital literacy. He also co-authored *Selling Online* for the US market with Dearborn Trade Publishing.

He co-hosted *NetTalk*, a syndicated Canadian radio program on internet trends (ca. 1994–1996), and later hosted *eBiz with Jim Carroll*, a national Canadian program on e-commerce (ca. 2000).

From 1998 to 2002, Carroll wrote a regular technology and business column for *The Globe and Mail*, Canada's national newspaper of record, initially appearing weekly in the Report on Business section, with occasional contributions continuing to 2008. He also contributed columns to *CAmagazine*, *Profit Magazine*, *Computing Canada*, *Hi-Tech Career*, *Successful Meetings*, the CSAE's *The Association Agenda*, and numerous trade publications. His published article count over his career exceeds 800 items, documented in his O-1 visa supporting materials (2008).

In September 2001, Carroll was appointed to the federal Government On-Line Advisory Panel, advising the Government of Canada on the delivery of government services via the internet.

### Futurism and Keynote Speaking (2000–Present)

Following his work in internet consulting, Carroll shifted his professional focus to business futurism and innovation. His career trajectory — from early internet authorship through to his current work as a global keynote speaker on technology trends — was documented in a 2025 long-form profile in *Pivot* magazine (CPA Canada) entitled "The Accidental Oracle" (Chris Powell, Spring 2025; https://archive.org/details/pivot-magazine-spring-2025-jim-carroll).

In 2006, *BusinessWeek* identified his innovation blog as one of four leading global sources of insight on innovation and creativity. The article, "In Blogs," was written by Jessi Hempel and appeared in September 2006 (page 24). This is the source of the "BusinessWeek recognition" cited across his official materials.

Carroll has argued publicly for a new model of business education — the "MBI" (Master of Business Imagination) — as an alternative to the traditional MBA. The thesis was covered in *Fast Company* (Heath Row, "MBA No More," May 19, 2005; https://www.fastcompany.com/669951/mba-no-more) and *The Globe and Mail* (Harvey Schachter, "Forget an MBA. How About an MBI?" June 2010).

Notable keynote engagements across his futurism career include:

- **NASA** — Invited twice: Goddard Space Flight Center and a second engagement, covering the future of space commercialization and organizational innovation

### Legal Expert Witness Work (1996–2008)

Between 1996 and 2008, Carroll was retained as an internet-technology expert witness in a series of Canadian court cases, spanning four law firms and reaching the Supreme Court of Canada. His combination of credentials — a Chartered Accountant's evidentiary discipline, hands-on internet experience dating to 1982, and a published, citable body of work — made him a repeat choice for explaining internet technology and its business implications to Canadian courts during a period when the courts themselves were still establishing basic vocabulary for the medium.

- **Tele-Direct (Publications) Inc. v. American Business Information, Inc.** — Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division (Court File No. T-1373-94; [1996] F.C.J. 908). Sworn statement, May 1996, explaining internet domain-name and directory technology in a landmark Canadian case on the copyrightability of compiled directories.
- **Keating et al. v. Bragg et al.** — Supreme Court of Nova Scotia (S.H. No. 133691; (1996) 158 N.S.R.(2d) 241). Expert affidavit in a shareholder-oppression dispute involving Bragg Communications (now Eastlink) and an early cable-internet joint venture with Bell Aliant predecessor MT&T. The court dismissed the oppression application in full.
- **ITV Technologies, Inc. v. WIC Television Ltd.** — Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division (Court No. T-1459-97; trial decision 2003 FC 1056; appeal 2005 FCA 96). Retained via McCarthy Tétrault (1997, re-retained 2002–03) in a trademark dispute between ITV Technologies (itv.net) and broadcaster WIC Television, later folded into CanWest Global's Global Communications Limited subsidiary. Sworn and rebuttal affidavits addressing internet-user confusion and domain-registration history.
- **Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada v. Canadian Association of Internet Providers ("Tariff 22")** — Supreme Court of Canada (file 29286; 2004 SCC 45). Retained by Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP on behalf of a coalition of Canadian ISPs, telecoms and broadcasters (including Bell Canada, Telus, and the CBC). Carroll's affidavit, filed in 2002, argued that automated web caching was a passive, infrastructural function of the internet rather than a copyright-relevant act. SOCAN's motion to strike the affidavit was rejected in September 2002; leave to appeal was granted in March 2003, and the ISP coalition won the appeal outright on June 30, 2004 — a landmark decision still cited in Canadian copyright and internet law.
- **Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, Bell Mobility Inc. and Telus Communications Company v. SOCAN ("Tariff 24," ringtones)** — Supreme Court of Canada (file 32516; application from 2008 FCA 6). Retained by McCarthy Tétrault on behalf of Bell, CWTA and Telus; affidavit filed March 2008 arguing against a "double royalty" on ringtone transmission. A second SOCAN motion to strike Carroll's evidence was dismissed with costs in April 2008; leave to appeal was ultimately denied that September.

### A Documented Predictive Track Record

Because Carroll's professional writing dates back to 1994, several of his books contain specific, dated, checkable predictions about the internet's economic and technological future — a rare, self-authored paper trail that can be graded directly against outcomes decades later.

- ***The Canadian Internet Advantage*** (1995) forecast approximately 100 million computers connected to the internet by the year 2000 (a figure that landed almost exactly on target); argued the internet would "accelerate disintermediation" of travel agents, record stores, and other retail middlemen years ahead of the fact; and rejected the era's "500-channel universe" cable-television hype outright, predicting instead a "million, or a hundred million, or maybe 500 million channel universe" in which "anyone, anywhere will be able to produce their own show on the Internet" — a description of user-generated video platforms roughly a decade before YouTube launched.
- ***Light Bulbs to Yottabits*** (2000) predicted that internet-connected microprocessors (which the book calls the "IP-chip") would proliferate through everyday appliances and devices — an early description of what became the Internet of Things — and made a direct, specific, and correct call that the MP3 format would defeat the recording industry's rival "SDMI" copy-protection standard. The book also warned explicitly, in print, of a coming shakeout among unprofitable, venture-funded internet companies and a possible resulting recession, published just as the dot-com crash of 2000–2002 was beginning.
- ***Good Health Online*** (1997) forecast the shift of medical information and patient self-research to the internet, the erosion of unilateral physician authority over health information, and the rise of direct-to-consumer online health resources — all well established by the mid-2010s.

A full, independently graded scorecard of predictions from these books — including the calls that did not come true — is maintained as part of Carroll's ongoing archival and retrospective work.

## PERSONAL

Carroll lives in Guelph, Ontario, with his wife Christa, a long-time collaborator on his publishing and speaking business; they have two adult sons. He is an avid golfer and skier, interests that have become recurring texture in his keynote material and a natural fit with his long-standing relationship with the PGA of America.

In 2020, when the live-events industry stopped almost entirely at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carroll built one of the industry's earliest sophisticated virtual keynote broadcast studios in his own basement — multiple physical sets, green-screen environments, and a multi-camera production setup — describing it at the time as a family project rather than a solo one, with his wife and sons all involved in pitching and producing the new format. By late 2020 the studio had become a genuine competitive advantage, and in-person bookings recovered fully through 2021. The episode later became a central case study in his book *Now What: Reinvention and the Role of Optimism in Finding Your New Future*.
