“Disrupting your future before it disrupts you? It’s all about knowing the opportunities that you should pursue, the challenges you must avoid, and the wisdom to make the right decision each and every day!” – Futurist Jim Carroll
Each and every day, people and organizations are faced with choice – the strategies they will pursue, the decisions they will make, the attitudes they will adopt.
Those choices matter, particularly today when markets, industries and customers are changing faster than ever before.
Take what is happening with the automotive industry. Everyone knows that the long term shift is away from a world in which we drive cars based on carbon – to one in which cars with big batteries drive themselves. That’s a pretty massive change, and it provides for both havoc and opportunity.
The result of this reality is that there will be winners and losers in the long run – yet it is the impact of many decisions that are being made today that will drive those outcomes. That’s why I’m fascinated when I see the CEOs of some automotive companies – Volkswagen comes to mind – acknowledge this looming reality – while others discount it. (Honda’s CEO: “EVs will not be mainstream“).
How can you be responsible for a multi-billion dollar company and adopt strategies that are obviously not in your best interest? Is your goal to be a case study in a future Harvard Business Review article as to how a smart company did stupid things and missed out on the future?
When I’m talking about trends with my clients, I’ll put into perspective the long term transformative trends that are underway – the end of the era of oil and the reality of distributed, renewable energy generation; a world of retail in which more products come to us rather than us going to have to get them; a healthcare system in which we fix you before you are sick; an insurance industry in which we underwrite risk by looking forward rather than looking back; instruction methodologies where we assemble buildings in factories using robots rather than with humans on location; and so much more.
