“The future doesn’t stop with massive & relentless volatility – it’s just timing, certainty, direction and outcome that goes right out the window!” – Futurist Jim Carroll

Back in 2019, I pulled together a video series about the future – ’19 Trends for 2019.’

19 Trends for 2019

One of those trends had to do with “The End of Oil.”

19 Trends for 2019: #14 The End of The Era of Oil

But what happened yesterday with a massive collapse in the price of oil futures is not quite what I had in mind!

My observations on this particular trend had more to do with the accelerated cost collapse of renewable technology, the acceleration of battery storage science, the arrival of energy micro-grids and much more.

And so now, in an era in which the price of oil futures is essentially nil, is the trend that involves ‘the end of the era of oil’ still real?

Most definitely – but delayed, perhaps! Thrown a massive curveball. Tossed into a zone of uncertainty! And that is our current reality with many of the trends which we have known.

And yet, not really. The hard facts behind my observation still stand on their own: the science, technology and innovation driving the trend might simply be delayed, but are not stopped. The economics of renewables has changed, but the science and technology innovation driving the trend still exists. And the great awakening occurring with Covid-19 is such that we just might have a new global consciousness emerge around our relationship with the world around us. Some believe it will accelerate the trend again towards a non-carbon future.

In other words, lots to think about when it comes to the future! And so it goes.

Our new world of massive volatility is such that the things we knew were going to happen are shaped, changed, challenged – some are destroyed altogether. But by and large, the future goes on with its’ relentless march forward. Much has changed, and yet much has stayed the same.

It’s become my new job to put some interpretation on that new reality. With that in mind, I started doing some research through the weekend on how particular industries and professions have been impacted by this ‘thing’ – and an outline of which ones might seen one of those massive ‘innovation booms’ that have defined the emergence of new billion dollar opportunities.

So stay tuned – this will be the focus of a part of my regular online broadcast this Thursday at 1130AM EST. I hope you join me!
