“A life in a shambles is really just in transition to the next opportunity!”
I think if I ever retire, I will get into a role of a career counsellor!
In the last few days, I’ve had another close friend with a sudden, unexpected and nerve wracking change in his job circumstances. My job is now to help him – by moving his focus from challenge to opportunity.
That’s what I do on stage all over the world – I’m regularly encouraging people to take on the challenge of the negativity of business model disruption and turn it into opportunity through innovative thinking.
So it’s only natural that I help out a good buddy by doing the same thing! I’m even going to build him a spiffy new personal resume Web site!
Here’s a fact: it’s when you become comfortable that bad fortune decides to slam you in the head and batter you about! It’s what you do with it that matters.
When bad things happen to good people – what’s done is done. It’s time to move on, to put effort into positioning yourself for the next opportunity, rather than focusing on the last one.
A shift in attitude is a critical part of the process. t’s really like the seven stages of grief – I’ve got to move him quickly beyond the shock and anger stage into acceptance!
Once you accept the finality of your powerlessness over your situation, you can begin to make the necessary changes, and put in the proper effort, to move to the next stage!
What is that next stage? Capturing the full range of the awesomeness of the skills, capabilities and enthusiasm he has already brought to his resume so far! Making his skills and capabilities shine in such a way that people will be clamouring for his services – not the other way around!
Once you move from being a hunter, to someone who is being hunted, you’ve made the necessary shift!
Throughout your life, there are moments where you must accept the fact that what is done is done – you can’t fix the past. You can only change the future.
There is only what you decide to do today to prepare for your new reality
