I heard this comment from a friend last night, and wow – did that ever resonate with me as a path on how to go forward, whether with your personal life or when faced with business model change.
If your industry is being disrupted and challenged, you can be a barrier to change – quite simply, your attitude will get in the way of the necessary efforts to make the big, bold moves to transform the organization. You need to focus on the opportunity, not the downside; the potential, not the negative.
Otherwise, you become a very part of the problem the organization is trying to fix.
The idea works on a personal level as well – you might be someone with behaviours that are reckless, impulsive, to-the-moment, self-centred – and as a result, you aren’t really helping others around you too much – it’s all about you!
If you shift from that to focus on how you can assist and help others – well, then it’s a whole new ballgame!
